2nd April 2015....Palo Duro Canyon State Park...Texas

Our trip today takes us 21 miles south of Amarillo to The Palo Duro State Park the 2nd largest canyon in North America...
Opened on 4th July 1934 and consists of 27,173 acres...
A colourful chap...seen on the walk down to the visitors centre...
Some old girl and a nice view of part of the canyon in the background...
More beautiful colour in a desert type environment...
We took the 16 mile loop road from the visitors centre down onto the canyon floor.....loads of viewpoints and trailheads with ample parking...
The rock formations here are called "Mexican Skirts" due to the shape and colours of the formations...
There are many trails of various lengths and difficulty, we choose a few shorter ones as it is very hot and we are not yet in peak hiking condition !!!!! But enough to know we have had a good leg stretch and worked off a few calories...
Part of the Rojo Grande Trail a nice hike along the river....interesting geologic rock formations .....
More of the rock strata showing the white layers of "quartz"....
Wild turkeys.....and a nice spot and time for our lunch sandwich...no not turkey !!
Back home and a visit to the The Cadillac Ranch gift shop which is just a couple of miles from our campsite...
And the actual Cadillac Ranch, sadly a disappointment, understandably showing the passage of time after 40 years but it's a very messy area, lots of litter and we disagree with the graffiti which is encouraged...
Ha ha....a water tower at last.....

We've had a very enjoyable day out...a mix of cultures....back home in time for a cuppa  :)
More soon from The Happy Campers...
