26th April.....Grants Canal & other non events.....Louisiana

Clear blue skies this morning for popping over the river and into Louisiana ....
We had a bit of trouble finding this historic site having taken a wrong turn....had to ask directions from the locals it was a tad beware of the banjos but joking aside they were really nice folks !!
Have to say the site wasn't really worth the effort but not all historic sites can be wow factors and we'll take the rough with the smooth...however the story is during the Civil War Grant wanted to cut a canal through to the eastern side of Vicksburg to avoid the Confederate bombardment on the Mississippi River but due to illness, dysentery and floods the project was never completed...
A white heron in flight seen on route to our next stop at Mound and an  old aircraft museum...oops  closed on Sundays...
Again landscape very agricultural.....This is cotton country...
Last stop today is back in downtown Vicksburg.....our neighbours said the big American Queen Riverboat was docked at the quay.....strike 3 today as not so !!
But all is not lost as an opportunity to view the big murals along the quayside...
Pre a railroad bridge over the Mississippi River the trains were loaded onto train ferries...

The local fire station...
The tug boat pushes a group of up to 40 barges at a time..called a tow..
Has to be at least a quarter of a mile long....
We were recommended Rusty's in old Vicksburg for their fried green tomatoes topped with crab meat and hollandaise sauce and we weren't disappointed they were delicious.....
Well the weather report is not good, more storms are forecast so sadly we cancel our plans to drive from here to Nashville on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Having experienced a fallen tree we do not want to chance our luck, we also heard that there were 3 mini tornadoes just north of here yesterday....so we shall head south to the beaches of The Gulf Coast, it will be a long drive tomorrow so for now it's goodnight from
The Flexible Campers.....

  1. Hi Sue & Michael,
Looks that the weather is being a little unkind to the intrepid travelers( any consolation its wet and cold here ),Impressed with your tree moving activities to get through, still it was St Georges day.
Thinking of visiting the shops to try and replicate your meal at Rustys ,looked good.
    When are you back?
Looking forward to a restful weekend.
    Enjoy,
    Ann & Dave
