Gila Cliff Dwellings, National Monument....27th March 2015

The Gila Cliff Dwellings are a very pretty 2 hour drive from our campsite in Silver City it's only 44 miles but the road is narrow and winding....
This photo taken from a viewpoint on the 1 mile roundtrip hike to the cliff dwellings...just an elevation gain this time of 180ft..
It was a bit chilly when we set out this morning but now the temps have risen and again in the 80's...not complaining we can shed a layer or two :)
Unlike the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde the parks service allow visitors to enter the structures...

Like Mesa Verde and Tonto cliff dwellings that we have visited it is a mystery as to what motivated the Puebloans to inhabit the caves and in this case only live in them for only a few decades..
About 40 rooms were built inside the 5 caves here...
As ever the rangers were so informative and enthusiastic....

Camp Harris, Rose Valley Ranch RV Park and another on our favourite campsites list...
I mentioned copper mining and this is the Santa Rita Copper Mine and it's HUGE !!
This pic taken from a viewpoint....have to say the open cast mine is fascinating, the colours of the strata and the development of the structure but we would think very controversial.....
The information boards say it stretches for a mile but seems much more than that...
Our campsite is next to The Memorial Cemetery.....many early settlers are buried here including the mother of Billy The Kid.....
Tomorrow we move on to Roswell....home of the alien invasion....if we are not heard from again you know what might have happened !!!
The Happy Campers....
